SIC Codes:

As before, we assign each NYSE, AMEX, and NASDAQ stock to an industry portfolio at the end of June of year t based on its four-digit SIC code at that time. However, we now use not only CRSP, but also Compustat as a source of SIC codes. We use Compustat SIC codes (for the fiscal year ending in calendar year t-1) whenever available. Otherwise, we use CRSP SIC codes (for June of year t).

The data, generated in the old way, will be available for download for a couple more months.

49 Industry Portfolios:

We have added an industry grouping based on 49 industry portfolios. The new industry is Computer Software (SIC codes 7370-7373, 7375). The old industry Computers has become Computer Hardware (SIC codes 3570-3579, 3680-3689, 3695). Also, Passenger Car/Truck Rental and Leasing (SIC Codes 7510-7515) has been moved from Business Services to Personal Services. Warehousing and Storage (4220-4229) has been moved from Transportation to Business Services. SIC Code 6726 has been added to the Trading Industry.

48 Industry Portfolios:

Passenger Car/Truck Rental and Leasing (SIC Codes 7510-7515) has been moved from Business Services to Personal Services. Warehousing and Storage (4220-4229) has been moved from Transportation to Business Services. SIC Code 6726 has been added to the Trading Industry.

30 Industry Portfolios:

SIC Code 6726 has been added to the industry Banking, Insurance, Real Estate, and Trading.

17 Industry Portfolios:

SIC Codes 6724-6726 have been added to the industry Banking, Insurance, Real Estate, and Trading.
