Dr. Robert A. Howell

Dr. Howell is married to Elizabeth (Betsy) C. Howell. He has two sons, one stepson, one stepdaughter (all adults), and seven grandchildren.

His interests include golf, skiing, jogging (he has taken part in two marathons), travel, politics, and reading. He is a keen supporter of the Boston Red Sox.

Dr. Howell is an avid golfer and plays to a 10 handicap. He has never had a hole-in-one; he has had a 2 on a 420-yard, par-4 hole, and an eagle on a 525-yard, par-5 hole!

He has belonged to The Riverton Country Club in Riverton, New Jersey, The Weston Golf Club in Weston, Massachusetts, Woodway Country Club in Darien, Connecticut, Desert Mountain in Scottsdale, Arizona, and currently belongs to The Club at Cordillera in Edwards, Colorado, and the Golf Club at Turner Hill, Ipswich, Massachusetts.

Dr. Howell has been a Red Sox "fanatic" since 1947, when he made his first visit to Fenway Park to watch Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, Bobby Doerr, and Dom Dimaggio (see David Haberstom's book, Teammates), and the rest of the Sox. He tried to make the team when he graduated from high school, but failed to do so. Several years ago, he attended "Red Sox Fantasy Camp" with a childhood playmate, John Ferries, Dartmouth '59, Tuck '60. These two guys look pretty good in their Red Sox uniforms!

Dr. Howell skis frequently at Vail and Beaver Creek, Colorado, both resorts being a short distance from his Colorado residence. He also skied in the Alps, in Switzerland and Austria, while living in Europe.

He has jogged for more than 35 years, and has run two NYC Marathons and a number of half marathons, 10k's, and 5k's. His best marathon time was 3 hours, 41 minutes.

Prof. Howell has traveled extensively for teaching and consulting purposes, including 47 U.S. states, Canada, Mexico, and South America, to virtually every Western European country, to Poland, Czechoslavakia, Hungary, and Slovenia, Russia and Georgia, Japan, and China.

Highlights include skiing in Lech, Austria; Provence, and Tuscany; taking an overnight train from Moscow to St. Petersburg; Kyoto, Japan, and the Great Wall of China.

Future plans include Australia and New Zealand.
