Dinner for Two
Theme This year our theme is entitled Everyone Can Win to emphasize that reaching the appropriate balance between work and life is in the interest of both employees and employers. Work-life issues are often discussed in the context of making “trade-offs”. If you choose to devote time to your personal life, then your career will suffer and vice versa. However, more employers and individuals are beginning to realize that this is not a zero-sum game. Success in one aspect does not detract from the other but instead acts to accelerate success in the other. This creates a virtuous cycle where businesses and individuals can achieve their goals by aligning their work and life priorities. Conversely, lack of balance can have serious health effects. Businesses have found that focusing on work-life issues increases retention, employee motivation and productivity; similarly, healthcare organizations are finding that improved work-life balance may positively impact medical outcomes. Individuals have found that devoting time to their personal life has resulted in better health, improved productivity and a greater sense of commitment to firms in which they work. It is a win-win situation for everyone. Mission The mission of the symposium is to provide a forum for the Tuck and Dartmouth Medical School communities to discuss how individuals and businesses can effectively manage the balance between professional and personal interests. Specifically, the goals of the symposium are to:
