Fireside Chat with Social Entrepreneur

Charles Lief, former President of Greyston Foundation and Bakery.
    

     Charles G. Lief, current Chairman of Social Enterprise Alliance, is a partner in the Hartland Group Community Developers and Consultants in Burlington, VT. The Hartland Group develops mixed income housing and commercial projects emphasizing smart growth and the restoration of old downtowns. It also serves as a consultant to nonprofit community development entities working in the areas of affordable housing, economic development and social enterprise.

From 1992-2003, Chuck was the President of the Greyston Foundation, a community development organization that has been active in Yonkers, New York for the past 22 years. Greyston is well known for its work in economic development and community revitalization. During Chuck's tenure Greyston grew from 20-180 employees and has developed more than $50,000,000 of permanent housing and commercial properties. It developed and now operates a child care center, New York's largest HIV/AIDS housing and health services program outside of New York City, manages many community gardens, a computer learning center and employment services for the chronically unemployed. The Greyston Bakery and its highly regarded strategic alliance with Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream is a model of non-profit social entrepreneurship. Chuck is the Chair of the Board of the Greyston Bakery.
