Using business to improve the world.
Welcome to Tuck's Net Impact chapter! With more than 170 members, we are one of the largest Opportunites at Tuck. We hold formal meetings, events, and activities for the whole club every other week; smaller "interest groups" that focus on topics such as microfinance, clean technology, CSR, environmental sustainability, and social entrepreneurship also get together regularly. We send out a bi-weekly newsletter that lets students know about everything happening in the Dartmouth community that relates to the intersection of business and society.
For prospective students
If you're looking at this site, you're probably a prospective student. Welcome! We've designed this site to make it easy for you to learn about all of Tuck's social impact offerings. From the outside, we recognize that it can be pretty complex to put all the pieces together. Navigate the links to the left to get more details, but here's what you need to know in brief:
- The Allwin Initiative for Corporate Citizenship: This is the administrative organization responsible for the longer-term programmatic aspects of social impact at Tuck, such as bringing in more faculty, generating more research, increasing the number of courses, expanding career opportunities, and hosting big-name guest speakers. They are very open to student input and have created a "Student Roundtable" to formalize their interaction with students. Student Roundtable members are good resources if you have questions. The director of the Initiative, Pat Palmiotto, is also happy to speak with prospective students.
- Opportunites & activities: There are dozens of opportunities to get involved with issues at the intersection of business and society at Tuck. Net Impact seeks to be the organization that facilitates communication and collaboration across all the socially-focused Opportunites on campus, as well as the Allwin Initiative. All these Opportunites concentrate on fostering more near-term engagement in these issues. Check out the "Resources" page for more information about them.
- Courses & faculty: Tuck offers a couple courses related to these issues each term. (Go to "Courses" to get the details.) In addition, topics from ethics to CSR are constantly being integrated into standard core and elective courses. Additional courses are available to Tuck students at Dartmouth's Thayer School of Engineering and the Vermont Law School. As a small school, we may not have the sheer quantity of academics focused on these issues as other schools, but the beauty of Tuck is that they are eminently accessible. Whether you want to learn about the latest research in social marketing, CSR communications, or green building, a one-on-one meeting or an independent stuy is just a short email away.
- Careers: Recent alums have landed jobs with the Gates Foundation, FSG Social Impact Advisors, Bridgespan, etc. Others have gotten positions with cleantech VCs and alternative energy groups of major energy companies. Check out past newsletters here to see some recent job opportunities. The hardest part about finding a great opportunity in Tuck's Career Development Office is convincing yourself that you don't want to go the traditional consulting, banking, or general management route. Great opportunities for social impact are typically found after the normal recruiting cycle and often require networking with Tuck's fantastically responsive alumni.
