CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

This half-day conference will be held on Friday February 27th, 2009 at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth and will bring together life sciences companies, providers, payers and patients to examine the changing business models and new innovations in the Pharmaceutical industry. The audience will consist of Tuck school students, Dartmouth undergrads, Dartmouth Medical schools students, and other Dartmouth graduate program students as well as medical professionals, academics and industry participants.

The conference will seek to understand the changing nature of the pharmaceutical industry and the ripples it creates in the rest of the healthcare sector. The first panel will explore how shallow pipelines, price and volume restrictions, and declining R&D productivity have reshaped the industry business model allowing for more cost competitiveness and differentiation and resulting in superior long term value. The second panelists will look at the pharmaceutical industry’s efforts of value creation through innovative partnerships and ideas.

Previous editions of this conference focused on the emergence of biogenerics, drug costs and pricing. Keynote speakers have included Peter Dolan, former CEO of BMS, and Steve Gillis, Managing Director of ARCH Venture Partners.

Keynote Address

"Navigating the Sea Change"
Steven Burrill
CEO, Burrill & Company

The global financial crisis will be kinder to the life sciences industry than to some other industries, but will have profound implications nonetheless. The crisis comes amidst other forces, including increased pressure on drug prices, a shift towards evidence-based medicine and comparative effectiveness, and the accelerating pace of globalization, that had already begun to reshape the industry. Given this sea change, life sciences companies must focus on partnerships around a few key opportunities and, for those with the means, strategic acquisitions in order to maximize their chances for survival.
