Recruiting

Introduction to Recruiting

Recruiting for summer internships begins shortly after the fall semester kicks off.  Expect to have several "brown bag" lunches hosted by investment banks, consulting firms, and other large corporations during the first six weeks of school.  If you are undecided and want to learn more about a potential internship in Investment Banking, Sales & Trading, Private Wealth Management, or Corporate Finance, your best informational resources are firm presentations, 2nd year students, your classmates, and the Career Development Office (CDO).  CDO does a good job of pushing off much of your interviewing obligations to the winter term, but it is important to prepare for the recruiting crunch during whatever spare time you can find in the fall term.  See the recommended timeline to get an overview on the recruiting process!

Company Briefings

While your classwork may seem overwhelming, it is important to attend company briefings because they present you with a good opportunity to learn first-hand about each firm, their strengths, accomplishments, and corporate culture.  It is important to make an extra effort to familiarize yourself with the pros & cons, and the differences between firms & industries.   Every firm is unique (much like the top business schools) and the more time you spend learning about the various firms, the easier the recruiting process becomes.  In addition, many of the firms have sign-up lists so they can see who attended the various presentations.

Next Steps

To supplement these company briefings the Finance Club will provide students with several resources to assist in the recruiting process.  In the fall we will arrange resume review sessions and mock interview workshops.  We will also have presentations from students who worked with various Investment Banks to talk about their employment experiences.  Occasionally we will host clinics with outside financial institutions to provide a recruiter's perspective on how to "nail" tough interview questions and boost your knowledge of the financial industry.
