Tuck GIVES Internship:

Tak Mikoshiba T’09
Education Pioneers
New York City Department of Education

I spent the summer working for the Performance Management & Talent Development Group in the Human Resources Division of the New York City Department of Education (DOE). It is the largest school system in the US with a yearly operating budget of $17 billion and more than 1.1 million children in the system.

My main mission was to help finalize a managerial competency model and to create a comprehensive learning guide for professional development and continuous learning. for the 1,000+ managers in the central administration. In addition, I helped design the curriculum details for their Chancellor’s Fellowship Program, a leadership development initiative, which is scheduled to be launched this fall. I was blessed to meet and work with numerous outstanding and dedicated leaders in DOE.

My internship was arranged by the Education Pioneers Fellowship Program, which places graduate school students in business, law, education and public policy with educational organizations in major U.S. cities. As part of the program, I participated in 8 education and leadership training sessions with 48 other fellows in the New York cohort. The workshop themes included critical educational topics such as Achievement Gap, Charter Schools, Teacher Quality, and Philanthropy in Education.

The combination of actual work experience in the school district, plus the profound learning and networking opportunities through the Education Pioneers’ programs, provided me with invaluable exposure to the education sector. The experience further expanded my firm interest and inspiration in this field. My internship provided me with everything that I was looking for, and I would like to sincerely thank the Tuck community for making this possible with the support of Tuck GIVES.
